“time away” at the appalachian mountain club’s highland center: good idea

February 22nd, 2008 by Ken

amc highland centerRecently, I needed a vacation from work and time to reflect and get away from the day to day work life. I didn’t have much time to plan a big trip; I just wanted to go to a place that would allow me to relax and take in some good outdoor activities with minimal work. Does such a place exist?

Then I recalled one of the organizations that posts in Venture’s College Venture Jobbank. In addition to running local outdoor clubs, producing great hiking maps & guides, and maintaining sections of the Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Mountain Club runs several lodges and huts. Their flagship lodge is the Highland Center located in the middle of the white mountains, and was the perfect location for my time away. The lodge is at the intersection of several hiking and cross-country skiing trails. The staff of the center were great at helping me plan hikes. They all ran fascinating programs about the local environment, animals in the area, and the “green” features of their lodge.

Four days there left me refreshed and focused. However, if you’re a student looking for an ideal place to spend a semester and learn about the outdoors, you can see their internship posting. It’s number 1110 in the College Venture Jobbank.
