Venture’s Offices move to J. Walter Wilson

On Friday, August 8, 2008, the Venture Consortium’s offices will move to the newly renovated J. Walter Wilson. The building will host an array of departments that will support the needs of Brown University students. Brown’s Office of Facilities Management has renovated the entire building. Venture will be located on the third floor with the Curricular Resource Center and the Registrar’s Office.

UES Student experiences life in a classroom and in the policy world

Venture’s Urban Education Semester provides undergraduate students the opportunity to learn about the theory and practice of urban education by combining formal studies with an experience in k-12 public schools. During the Spring 2008 Semester, one UES student has embarked on a unique placement experience. Max Familian, Vassar College ‘09, spends half of his placement time working on projects at the Renaissance Charter School and the rest of his time working for Teachers Unite.

“time away” at the appalachian mountain club’s highland center: good idea

Recently, I needed a vacation from work and time to reflect and get away from the day to day work life. I didn’t have much time to plan a big trip; I just wanted to go to a place that would allow me to relax and take in some good outdoor activities with minimal work. Does such a place exist? (more…)

The Life of a First Year Teacher

Channel surfing PBS stations over the weekend, I caught a program (”Telling the Truth: The Best in Broadcast Journalism“) about this year’s Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards. What really caught my attention, in part because of my own enthusiasm about our Urban Education Semester program here at Venture, was the feature about a first-year teacher in an inner-city public middle school. Dateline NBC miked her up, filled her classroom with cameras, and filmed her throughout her first year of teaching. It was captivating; days later, I find myself still thinking of her. Google’s loaded with pages about the documentary: “The Education of Ms Groves” — catch it if you can!

before classes start, brown university students consider careers in the common good

Before the start of the spring semester, some Brown University students returned to Providence to participate in unique opportunities. Venture staff spent time with two groups of these students to support their interests in pursuing careers in community work.

Each Winter Break, Brown’s Swearer Center for Public Service runs Breaks Project. 30+ students from all class years spend a week before the start of classes living communally in downtown Providence. They explore and investigate local issues including hunger, homelessness, public health, and housing. At the end of their week Venture staff and staff from Brown’s Career Development Center ran an interactive workshop aiding students in connecting their experience to careers and internships in common good work.
For the second year, Brown undergraduates had an opportunity to return from winter break a week a half early to pursue unique learning opportunities through january@brown. This program included coursework and unique co-curricular experiences that exposed students close up to new learning opportunities and the city of Providence. As part of january@brown, Venture staff partnered with staff at Brown’s Swearer Center for Public Service to present students with information on ways to connect with community service and community work, both as students and as a career.

Brown University holds 2007 Mid-Year Completion Ceremony

On December 1, 2007, Brown University held its mid-year completion ceremony which recognizes students who complete their graduation requirements at the end of the Fall Semester. Many of these students have taken a semester to pursue learning opportunities outside of the classroom. The Brown Daily Herald covered the event. The following entry is Emma Tai’s (Brown ‘07.5) speech given at Brown University’s Midyear Completion Ceremony. It is published with the permission of the author.

Thank you, Dean Bergeron, and thank you to all of the family and friends, mentors and teachers who have joined us for this celebration.

There are nearly a hundred point-fivers gathered here today, December 1, just shy of the middle of the school year. We have completed eight semesters—or possibly more—or possibly less—and quite possibly not all in a row—at Brown, and thus we converge today with a well-earned sense of achievement. Yet the foremost question on my mind is not where we are going to work after this, whether or not I will have health insurance, or even what the cheese platter will be like at the reception, but rather: what are we doing here?
