Foundations and Grants About Foundations and Grants
Council on Foundations explains the terminology and types of foundations and provides information for foundation employees. Foundation News and Commentary (available at many libraries) reports on current developments in grantmaking. The Chronicle of Philanthropy (available at many libraries) gives updates on grantmaking activities, profiles individuals, corporations, foundations, and nonprofit organizations. The New York Times annual report on Giving profiles the status of American philanthropy.
Researching Grants and Foundations
The Foundation Center is the central resource for grant seekers in the United States. Their web site includes many useful tools. Philanthopy News Digest (PND) is a weekly e-mail news service. The Center's User Friendly Guide to Funding Research and Resources is an excellent place to start. Links to Grantmaker Web Sites leads you to to nearly 1,000 web sites. The Center publishes numerous directories of foundations. These and many other resources are made available at the Center's libraries as well as at Cooperating Collections across the country. The Community Foundation Locator from the Council on Foundations allows you to search by geography for foundations in your area. The Progressive Foundation Database from Progressive Resources Publications, includes information on hundreds of progressive foundations. Registration required. Fundsnet Services provides links to more than 700 online funding resources. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's Deadlines List lists deadlines for grants and fellowships as well as conferences and other events. Foundations On-Line offers a directory of grant makers and foundations on the web. Funders Online, maintained by The European Foundation Centre, is a searchable database of European philanthropic organizations. GrantsWeb, from the Society of Research Administrators, provides an organized set of links to grant research tools. Particularly strong on the federal labyrinth, but also includes links to other sources. The Grantsmanship Center, Inc. offers links to funding opportunities through federal grants, community foundations, state government and international sources. TGCI goes through the online Federal Register text in search of new grant opportunities daily. ResearchResearch (formerly ScienceWise), an organization that issues announcements of federal and other grants, offers a fee-based e-mail grants announcement service. You can try the service free for 30 days.
Government Funding
Grants, Loans and Other Assistance, from the Nonprofit Gateway, links to government agency home pages that provide information on grants. The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) is a compendium of federal programs, projects, services, and activities that provide assistance or benefits to the American public. The Federal Register, printed each business day by the U.S. government, lists Notices of Funding Availability (NOFAs) (announcements of grants). The easiest way to find them may be an advanced search for notices. FirstGov.gov Search is a search engine for federal government websites.
Funding Sources for Specific Issues
Grantsnet, from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the American Association for the Advancement in Science (AAAS), offers hundreds of funding opportunities in the biological and medical sciences. The Art Deadlines List offers a free selection of listings as well as a free monthly e-newsletter covering juried exhibitions, contests, scholarships, funding and other opportunities for artists, art educators, and art students. Join Together Online, a project of the Boston University School of Public Health, offers funding information related to substance abuse, gun violence, and related topics.

groups seeking Federal grants featuring tips on completing standard
forms and a grant-writing exercise that lets applicants view
