history

Since 1973, the Venture Consortium has been committed to the value of a liberal education, experiential learning as a powerful pedagogy, and helping students make lifetime commitments to social responsibility. Programs and experiences for students that integrate theory and practice have been at the core of our work.

Over our 30 year history, we have supported experiential learning during time off from school, the theory and practice of urban education, and introducing graduating seniors to work in the non-profit sector. We strive to offer unique programs, resources in and opportunity for conversation about these content areas.

Recently, Venture has re-examined its role in deepening commitments to social responsibility at our member institutions. The service-learning movement in higher education has compelled us to engage in a series of dialogues that have resulted in the articulation of many new issues of common concern. These conversations have inspired many of us to renew our commitment as educators and institutions to the practice and challenging work of educating students for social responsibility.

new work

As a result of our self-study, we are launching some new initiatives. We are piloting, 'The Engaged Life,' a program for students that will give them to opportunity to articulate their values, ideal career pathways, and lifetime commitments to social responsibility. In addition, we are facilitating a new series of ongoing dialogues for students, faculty and staff interested in the significance of community-based learning at liberal arts schools and for colleagues wishing to explore new ways of working together around the notion of educating students for global citizenship. Venture's former and current collaborative efforts reflect not only our dynamic nature, but also our responsiveness to the changing needs of liberal arts undergraduates.
