> programs for new teachers

Many schools and school systems recognize the benefits of a structured framework and support system for new teachers. There are currently a variety of programs that exist to mentor new teachers, assist them with certification, and train them for the classroom while simultaneously placing teachers in an actual compensated teaching position. The specifics of the programs vary, but often share common elements. Selected programs are highlighted below.

Most Fellows attend one of the City University of New York (CUNY) colleges (including Brooklyn, City, Hunter, Lehman, Queens, and Staten Island).

Training: Summer Training takes place before students begin teaching in their own classrooms in the fall. Training takes place in the summer, over the course of two months. It consists of three main components: (1) Master's degree coursework focusing on educational theory and methods; (2) Field placement work, in which Fellows observe and assist in classrooms with experienced New York City Teachers; (3) Fellow Advisory meetings, in which Gellows meet together with an advisor to share experiences and to learn practical classroom skills and management techniques.

Certification: During the period of the Fellowship, Fellows are considered "certified" and work under a Transitional B Certificate from New York State. This certificate is valid for up to three years, as long as you maintain good standing as a Fellow. At the completion of the Master's Program, which typically takes two years, Fellows may apply for initial Certification. Upon completion of three years of teaching, including the period of the Fellowship, Fellows may apply for Professional Certification.
